Leaving behind a cloud mountain highway in the Southern Carpathians, the twists and turns that are unpredictable, as the path from a blossoming tangle thread - Transfagarasan, a Mecca for motorists who want to tickle your nerves. Clambering serpentine between the two highest peaks in Romania Moldoveanu and bliss, the highway reaches the top mark in 2034 meters - and falls down a breathtaking downhill, winding like a spiral staircase.
There really is dangerous - no strikers and hundred-meter cliffs make the track one of the most dramatic roads in the world. Local rarely go through it faster 40-50 km / h, and when they outperform disapprovingly twist a finger to his temple. Drivers from Western Europe, on the contrary, smile, raise their thumb and passengers open the windows and take pictures of the passing Skoda Octavia RS, bright as colorful glass beads.
On such an extreme road, the first test drive of the new RS took place - a good opportunity to emphasize that the third generation of the car has the most "explosive" character in the history of the Octavia: the two-liter petrol turbo engine TSI with the capacity of 220 l. from. develops 350 Nth torque - this is for 20 "horses" and 25% of thrust is greater than that of its predecessor. Up to 100 km / h, the new Er-esque accelerates for 6,8 seconds (faster than the previous generation for 0,4 seconds), and the maximum speed reaches 248 km / h. The diesel unit 2.0 TDI has a big "moment" (386 Н-m), but loses to the gasoline in terms of the number of horsepower (184 hp) - however, it will not be delivered to Russia anyway.
The machine is based on a universal modular platform MQB (as, for example, Audi A3, Seat Leon and Volkswagen Golf) - front McPherson strut with aluminum subframe and rear - multilink suspension; RS reduced clearance compared with conventional and Octavia on 12 13 millimeters in liftbek and wagon respectively.
The behavior of the car on the road can be set by selecting the settings - Normal, Sport and Eco, as well as individually adjust them "for themselves." Octavia in "everyday" mode - a real wolf in sheep's clothing: without annoying excessive responsiveness to the urban rhythm responsiveness to the gas pedal, she lulls the driver with smooth running and excellent noise isolation. But it is necessary to sink the accelerator more strongly, as having got out with a second delay from the inevitable turbojam, the engine literally throws the car into the head of the stream. The steering wheel seems too light, but the car is obedient and ready for a sharp maneuver - for example, to get around the pit, which on the roads of Romania is not less than ours.
"Economy" (or "green", depending on the priorities and citizenship) mode "lulls" car, forcing 6-step "robot» DSG switch to the highest "step" already 60-70 km / h On machines with a manual on the dashboard displays a hint, what gear the driver should choose. Incidentally, the "mechanics" especially felt as the engine has to literally "pull" every program - and go, following the requirements of Eco, quite uncomfortable.
However, "Eco" for "Octavia" RS is no more than an auxiliary mode. It is only necessary to go to the track (in Romania, by the way, it is quite acceptable speed limit - 130 km / h) and choose in the Sport settings, as the car is completely transformed. First of all, the sound of the engine changes. Funny, but the bass drum chattering and sneezing of the motor is audible only in the cabin - this is the work of an acoustic simulator. Perhaps, many here will put their lips to rest - it's very similar to the notorious "tuning", but the driver can as much as he likes to enjoy sports "notes" without imposing this on the surrounding residents.
However, the simpo- ser is really only an adornment, whereas in reality the behavior of the machine changes the "robot" actively shifting to lower gears, keeping the engine in the region of 2,5 thousand revolutions and, without looking at the fuel economy, "spinning" it to the red line of the tachometer . The "jammed" motor and transmission make the response to the gas pedal more nervous: at the exit of the turn the car and rushes forward, instantly picking up speed on a short straight section before another turn, and in braking the engine starts to participate, making it more efficient.
The steering wheel in the "Sport" pours a pleasant weight and acquires a noticeable reverse effort - the control becomes more sensitive and informative, allowing you to literally tactilely feel the edge behind which the skid begins. Yes, Er-eska is just perfectly controlled, keeping the track in corners even at high speed, but it does not have the "dead grip" inherent in real sports cars: it's worth taking shorter, and there is a roll, as well as nodding with intense braking. It seems that this is a payment for "suspension" to suit everyday comfort suspension. The converse is also true: on the jostling country roads one has to pay for its "sportiness".
Here it is, the price of a compromise. However, RS - this is not a "sport of high achievements", but rather physical education - like running in the morning. And buyers of the "hot" Octavia are by no means Olympians, but ordinary people burdened by everyday routine. And Er-eska offers them a good opportunity to shake up, combining the dynamic performance with the convenience of a large family car - yet 590 liters of luggage space (610 liters at the station wagon) and a second row of seats where a couple of adults can comfortably accommodate. In addition, fuel consumption in mixed mode (with alternating settings: city - Normal, route - Eco, mountain track - Sport) was 13,5 liters. If you consider that the total length of the test drive drive was about 600 kilometers, 90 of which the car was in the "Sport" - this is a good indicator.
Appearance of the Octavia RS, of course, successful - even the wagon looks fried, but the designers did not go too far with aggression. The common features of the body remained calm, and the "muscularity" of the cars is given by bright details: chrome exhaust pipes, a black diffuser with a red reflective strip, 18-inch wheels and red calipers peering through them. Liftback additionally boasts a spoiler on the trunk. In addition to the usual body colors for the RS, there are traditionally invented three special ones: catchy Rallye Green and Sprint Yellow (green and yellow "metallic"), and Steel Gray - perhaps one of the most interesting and pleasant shades of gray on the market.
Interior of the vehicle, though hints at its sporty character, but does not impose any driver racing ambitions: utilitarian dark tones quickened red stitching leather, pedals equipped with chrome lining, chairs have developed lateral support, in addition, the central panel and doors are decorated with inlays, simulating carbon. That's the whole "sport" - and it is absolutely the right decision for everyday car.
Sales Octavia RS in Europe start right now in Russian car will arrive in a couple of months. Its price has not been announced, but we can assume that the new Skoda will be somewhat cheaper soplatformennika Volkswagen Golf GTI, equipped with the same engine 2.0 TSI and "robot» DSG, which is standard equipment valued at 1 271 000 rubles.
