10 674 people signed petition, calling on the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and Greece to restore the ferry service, interrupted in 2000 year. The address is available in seven languages: Greek, English, French, Russian, Italian, Spanish and German. It is addressed primarily to the mayors of Limassol and Piraeus.
The initiative group believes that it is simply inconceivable - not to have regular sea voyages between Cyprus and Greece in the 21st century. Yannis Daniil, who placed the petition, believes that the restoration of the interrupted ferry service 18 years ago will bring economic benefits to both countries and lead to the creation of new jobs.
At the same time, not everything is so simple and unambiguous. Discussions on this topic, notes Phileleftheros, have never ceased. The main stumbling block - just the same economic feasibility of ferry communication. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus considers the project unprofitable, and shipping companies are not eager to implement its restart.
Previously discussed options for opening ferry lines that would link Cyprus with Crete and the ports of Piraeus and Lavrion in Attica. The discussions ended in nothing. Restoration of the ferry service between Cyprus and Greece can become a reality in case of receiving financing from the European funds. It will take several million euros a year.
