The Republic of Cyprus will continue to implement its plans for the development and production of gas from fields in the water area of the island. "In this we are supported by international law and the international community," said 15 May the official representative of the Government of Cyprus, Prodromos Prodromu.
This was the response of the authorities of Cyprus to the statement made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 11, which warned of possible instability in the region if Cyprus does not cease all activities in its exclusive economic zone.
Prodromu said that the island's energy plans are in accordance with international law, and also received support from Russia, the United States and the Council of Europe. The latter has already urged Ankara "to refrain from illegal actions that cause tension in the region."
