Public health services in Cyprus do not have ambulance teams that could carry a person weighing more than 181.2 kg, the Ministry of Health said.

The incident occurred on Thursday 7 June after the ambulance refused to transport a sick person with overweight from the Larnaka hospital in Nicosia.

The statement said that the doctor on duty at the Larnaka hospital asked the ambulance service to lead a patient suffering from obesity to a hospital in Nicosia, where doctors could assess his condition. To which he received an answer from the Ministry: "The patient in question is weighing more than 200 kilograms, and it is not possible to transport him to another city, because ambulances are not suitable for this."
