The Cyprus Radio Broadcasting Authority received an application for the creation of a 24-hour television channel, which will broadcast comedies in Russian.
As it became known to the local newspaper "Fileletheros", the channel does not presume Greek subtitles and will be completely focused on the Russian-speaking community living in Cyprus and Russian tourists. The Cyprus company that submitted the application is ready to start broadcasting right after receiving the license, and the format of the programs will not be connected with the news and current events.
However, it is expected that the application will be rejected by the broadcasting body. According to the law, all television frequencies are considered national wealth and therefore TV channels should use one of the official languages of the country. Also, the authorities are afraid of monitoring problems: due to the lack of qualified Russian-speaking employees, control over a new TV channel will not be possible.
The final decision will be made at the next board meeting.
