Israel is erecting a sea barrier along the border with the Gaza Strip, the construction of the facility is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, the Ministry of Defense said.
Stone breakwater, covered with barbed wire from above, should protect the state from the invasion of Palestinian sea commandos, which last year already attempted to land, RIA Novosti reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that the matter concerns "the only barrier in the world in its kind". According to him, it will effectively block attempts to penetrate the territory of the Jewish state in the coastal zone.
According to him, the construction of the barrier will disrupt the plans of the ruling Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip and make its "strategic weapon" useless.
The Israeli Defense Minister added that the decision to build was taken after the 2014 operation against militants from the Gaza Strip, when the elite of Hamas paramilitary forces landed on the Israeli coast.
Israel's land border with the enclave has long been encircled by walls and fences, in addition to which the authorities are building an underground barrier to protect against militant tunnels.
Israeli planes on Saturday evening inflicted an aviadar on the Palestinian armed formations of the Hamas movement in Rafah and in the Gaza Strip.
