The opening ceremony in Jerusalem of an American embassy in Israel, transferred from Tel Aviv, was held on Monday.
At the event, in particular, there was an official delegation from the United States, led by US Assistant Secretary of State John Sullivan. The delegation included, in particular, the daughter and adviser of the American president Ivanka Trump, as well as her husband Jared Kushner.
"On behalf of the 45 President of the United States of America, we officially greet you for the first time at the US Embassy in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel." Thank you, "the website of Business Insider quoted Ivanki Trump as saying at the ceremony.
Ivanka Trump, together with US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, officially opened a sign with the name of the institution.
During the event, a video message from US President Donald Trump was shown. "Israel is a sovereign nation that has the right to determine its own capital," he said.
"The United States will always be a great friend and partner of Israel in the name of freedom and peace," the American leader said. At the same time, he expressed hope for peace in the Middle East region.
"May God bless this embassy, may God bless all who will work here, and God bless the United States," Trump added.
In addition, the American ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, spoke at the ceremony, calling the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem "a historic event." "For this event, we should be grateful to the vision, courage and moral values of only one person - President Donald Trump," Friedman said.
The embassy is located in the Arnon area, where the US Consulate General used to be. Last week in the streets of Jerusalem appeared road signs to the embassy with inscriptions in Hebrew, Arabic and English. One of them was personally established by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat.
In addition, the square next to the new US embassy in Jerusalem will soon be renamed in honor of the US president. The square, which will now bear the name "United States Square in Honor of President Donald Trump," is located at the intersection of David Flusser Street and Kfar Etzion Street.
The building in Tel Aviv, where the US embassy was still located, will continue to be used by American diplomatic representatives. Most of the staff, about 850 people, will continue to work in Tel Aviv until the construction work in the building in Jerusalem is fully completed. However, the US ambassador to Israel and some of his subordinates will immediately begin work in Jerusalem.
The decision to postpone the embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was taken by US President Donald Trump in December 2017. The United States recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the country, which caused a wave of discontent among Palestinians, some Arab countries, and criticism of American partners.
Earlier on Monday, it was reported that about 10,000 Palestinians gathered in the administrative border area of the Gaza Strip with Israel. Some protesters tried to cross the border fence.
According to the latest Bloomberg data, as a result of clashes on the border of the Gaza Strip, 41 Palestinian was killed.
On the eve of the Israeli Defense Forces distributed leaflets in the Gaza Strip in Arabic with an appeal to local residents to abandon mass protests and refrain from attempts to cross border barriers.
