Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Alexander Downer resigned after the resumption of negotiations on the reunification of the island between the Greek and Turkish communities. Told the head of the world organization Ban Ki-moon.
Return to the negotiating table has become possible due to the agreement between them on the content of the joint communiqué, which sets out the basic principles of the reunification of Cyprus.
"Mr Downer informed me that now that the joint communique was reached, he decided to take a new post and resign from the post of my special adviser," - said in a statement the secretary general.
Alexander Downer has actively provided mediating organization during the previous round of the intercommunal talks with 2008 2012 to mid-year, as well as supporting the resumption of dialogue between the parties.
In his statement, Ban Ki-moon welcomed the joint communiqué of President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, praising their efforts to resume negotiations aimed at "a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem."
"The United Nations will continue to support the efforts of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to reunify the island and overcome decades of division. Personally, I promise a strong commitment to this effort," - said the UN Secretary General.
