Cyprus thwarted attempts two dozen Europeans to go to war in Syria

Cypriot authorities deported 18 foreign citizens who were going to fight in Syria. This Cypriot news agency said the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alexandros Zenon.

"Due to the geographical position of the country we are in close cooperation with the various security and intelligence services of countries in our region and beyond", - said Zeno.

He added that this cooperation "was quite effective, since we deported more than 18 so-called foreign fighters who wanted to go to the occupied territories of our country, to move to Turkey and then to Syria." These events occurred in the year 2015.

The official representative of the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the deportees had European passports and arrived in Cyprus from Western countries.
