At the Winter Olympics in South Korea, which starts on 9 February, Cyprus will be represented by only one participant (in Sochi-2014 there were two). According to Cyprus NewsAgency, mountain skier Dinos Lefkaritis will go to Pyeongchang. He was the candidate number 1 to participate in the Games in Sochi, but was injured and failed to recover in time.
A native of Larnaca first got on skis in five years. Now Dinos is a student at Bates College in Lewiston (USA, Maine). At international tournaments he represents Cyprus from 2008 year. Lefkaritis participated in the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012 year. His recent success is a silver medal at the Games of the small countries of Europe in Montenegro in December 2017.
In South Korea, a Cypriot skier will go accompanied by coach of the national team of Milan Matic. Dinos Lefkaritis will participate in competitions 18 February (giant slalom) and 22 February (slalom). In addition, he will carry the flag of the Republic of Cyprus at the official opening ceremony of the Olympics 9 February and the closing ceremony of 25 February.
For the first time Cyprus took part in the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid (USA) in 1980 year. In the same year, Cyprus for the first time participated in the Summer Olympics, which was held in Moscow. Since that time, Cyprus has exhibited athletes at all the Winter Olympics. During these years, 24 Cypriot athletes (17 men and seven women) performed in ten Olympiads.
