About 78 new cases of cancer in the head and neck are recorded each year in Cyprus, with 30 new cases of laryngeal cancer, said Tuesday the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, Christina Yiannaki.
Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of the World Day of Head and Neck Cancer, Yiannaki said that the authorities set as their goal to inform the public and raise its awareness in order to prevent the emergence of new incidents.
These types of cancer occur on the mucous membranes, while, according to statistics, 44% of cases - in the oral cavity, 31% - in the larynx and 25% - in the nasopharynx. The disease is more likely to affect men than women. Scientific research shows that this type of cancer is the fourth most frequently affecting the male population. Symptoms include: non-healing wounds on the mucosa, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, constant hoarseness. People who have similar health problems are advised to consult a doctor or dentist.
