It also did not agree: they burned right in the barrel chamber. To the aid came artificial materials - the sleeve was made of polyamide. The material is available and all are good, but there is one drawback - at temperatures over 250 degrees Celsius it melts. Shooting a box of 200 cartridges, the gun barrel heats up to 360 degrees, and 400 shots warm it up to 520. In a real battle, the machine-gunner beats, not sparing cartridges, so that the polyamide casings can not be offered to him.
This year, US gunsmiths tested the sleeves of another plastic - polyimide. Its maximum operating temperature is 400 degrees. While this is an acceptable indicator, and in due course should appear more durable materials. Scientists are working on this.
Bullets will also undergo significant changes already in the near future. UAVs are not just being improved now - the very concept of their application is changing.
All drone drones are essentially unmanned aircraft, so they need a runway. If the drone is a heavy machine with armament on board the type "Predator", then the runway needs decent dimensions - just like a real airplane. Now they decided to abandon the airplane concept.
Concern Northrop Grumman has shown the project of a shock UAV named Tern, the first prototype of which will rise in air already in 2018 year. The Tern unmanned vehicle stands on the ground in an upright position. He takes off in a helicopter. And then lies on the wing - and then flies like a plane. At the same time, he is planned to arm as well as powerful "Predators" with "Rippers".
TTX of the Tern dron has not yet been announced. We can assume that the range of his flight will be about two thousand kilometers. The main place of service is the Navy, the car can take off from any ship. That is, any American vessel - even a cruiser, even a tanker or a container ship - can be turned into a strike aircraft carrier. Stamya of such drone can be placed as many as you like - only rockets of the tray with cartridges.
The Tern UAV is also useful for small infantry units that operate in the mountains or in other areas with complex terrain. In fact, each infantry company can acquire its own aircraft and no longer request air support from a higher headquarters. Especially because it is not always interrogated.
For the US Air Force itself, gunsmiths came up with disposable drones-assistants. All the same concern Northrop Grumman showed drone Dash X. This multipurpose UAV is placed in a container and suspended on the aircraft as a combat load. If necessary, the pilot shoots it, the drone falls out of the container, spreads its wings, starts the engine and proceeds to the task.

Dash X can carry any payload. Is able to conduct electronic reconnaissance, interfere with enemy radars, use heat traps, take on enemy fire and so on.
Two prototypes of the Dash X command of the US Navy already tested and remained pretty. During the test flight drones in real time found targets and corrected the fire. It is already known that in 2019, these one-time scouts will be used by pilots F / A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler.
The US command considers another interesting idea: to turn all the decommissioned F-16 aircraft into drones and transfer them into submission to the fifth-generation F-35 fighter pilot. The idea is really original - in the end, every F-35 machine will receive a powerful escort from the previous generation of fighters. To cope with this swarm, a great effort will be required. By order of the main machine, F-16 can be the first to engage in combat, to cover F-35 from enemy air defense strikes, to conduct reconnaissance by combat.
The theory looks great, all the advantages are obvious. But what can be expected in a real combat clash, clearly not to the end. Manage your fighter and three or five other human brains at the same time is not enough, we will have to use "artificial intelligence" (let's call these algorithms so), especially since air defense missiles and enemy fighters fly on supersonic.
