British Ambassador in Cyprus Matthew Kidd urged both communities of Cyprus continued efforts in achieving agreement on a joint declaration.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Secretary General of AKEL Andros Kyprianou held today, Matthew Kidd said Kyprianou briefed him about his views on various issues related to the solution of the Cyprus problem.
Asked about the ongoing efforts to reach agreement on a joint declaration, he expressed the hope that the agreement on the establishment of a joint declaration will be achieved.
He noted that it took more time than originally planned, and expressed hope that the two sides were close to an agreement.
He said that it is very important to both sides to remain calm and continue their efforts to avoid the deadlock in the negotiations.
He also stressed that if an agreement is reached, it will be really useful from the point of view of the process in the future.
Answering the question of whether this is possible, given the significant differences of opinion between the two parties on the issue of sovereignty, he replied in the affirmative.
