Egypt's diplomatic interests in Qatar will represent the Greek Embassy in Doha at the request of Cairo, the Greek Foreign Ministry said.
"During today's (5 June) telephone conversation between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Nikos Cotzias and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukri, the Egyptian side expressed a request that the Greek Embassy in Doha assume the diplomatic representation of the friendly Arab Republic of Egypt in Qatar, The Foreign Ministry reported.
"The Minister of Foreign Affairs, in view of the close friendly relations between Greece and the Arab world, responded positively to the request of his Egyptian counterpart," - said in a statement received by RIA Novosti.
As noted in the Foreign Ministry, Greece is at the disposal of all parties in order to contribute in any way to regional cooperation and stability.
Greece has centuries-old close friendly ties with Egypt. In addition, Athens has a good relationship with Qatar. Several thousand Greeks reside in Qatar, the two countries have economic ties. About 3 thousand Greeks are working on the construction of facilities for the World Cup.
On Monday, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE announced a break in diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorist organizations and destabilizing the situation in the Middle East. The authorities of eastern Libya, Yemen, as well as the Maldives subsequently also announced the severance of relations with Qatar.
