Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the Syrian leader Bashar Assad late in the evening on Monday in Sochi, who arrived in Russia on a working visit, the Kremlin press service reported.
During the meeting, Putin presented Assad with the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the General Staff, which takes part in the meeting on military construction and the state armament program, the Kremlin website said.
In addition, the Russian head of state congratulated the Syrian president on the results that Damascus is seeking in the fight against terrorists, approaching their "final, unavoidable rout".
The leaders also discussed the principles of the congress of the peoples of Syria in Sochi.

On Monday, during a telephone conversation with Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Putin also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the situation in Syria, taking into account the successes in the fight against terrorism and the prospects for a political settlement in the republic.
