The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) opens on Thursday: it will last three days and will host more than 12 thousand participants from 133 countries on its site. This year, the forum will be held for the second time in the Expoforum exhibition and convention center, which is three times larger than the Lenexpo complex, where the forum was held until 2016.
SPIEF is held from 1997 year, from 2006 year it is held under patronage and with the participation of the Russian president. Given the scale of the forum, it deservedly can be considered the main economic event of the year.
Dozens of Russian and foreign funds and companies, including the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RFPI), VEB, Rosneft, RusHydro, the Russian Railways, plan to sign agreements and contracts for hundreds of billions of rubles in the framework of the forum.
Traditionally, the forum involves the first persons of states, members of the Russian government, heads of regions and major Russian and world companies, prominent public and political figures.

In his greeting, published in the SPIEF magazine, the head of state Vladimir Putin noted that in 2017 the forum will be held under the slogan "In search of a new balance in the global economy."

The Russian President will participate in the panel discussion "Russia-US Business Dialogue" and hold talks with the Federal Chancellor of Austria and the UN Secretary General. On the final day of the forum, Putin will attend the ceremony of naming the Arctic tanker "Christophe de Margerie" - a vessel of the unique ice class Arc7, designed for the Yamal LNG project.

The leitmotif of the forthcoming forum will be the development of digital technologies and their impact on the Russian economy. SPIEF participants will discuss the impact of digital technologies on the fuel and energy balance, real sales in augmented reality, the possibilities of artificial intelligence, the evolution of financial sector technologies, the digitization of the East and the West, global cyber threats, a digital revolution in healthcare, and the protection of intellectual property in the digital economy.
It is expected that one of the key topics of the forum will be a program developed by the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation for the development of the digital economy that will reduce Russia's lag in the sphere of high technologies from the most developed countries. According to the state corporation "Rostekh", Russia lags behind the developed countries in terms of the share of the digital economy in the total GDP, but now there is a rapid growth in the related sectors.
The program, which so far exists in the draft version, should provide practically 100% access of the population to broadband Internet to 2025 year. Within the framework of the SPIEF, the Summit of Information Agencies will be held for the fourth time, the organizer of which is traditionally TASS. The cultural program of the forum this year will include for the first time a new format - visiting the museums of St. Petersburg and the palace and park ensembles in its suburbs upon presenting the SPIEF badge as a ticket.
