The pollution of the sea in Limassol is a big problem. Annually, the authorities set new rules to prevent the discharge of sewage and waste into coastal waters, but these rules still do not work.
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, is monitoring the cleanliness of the sea in Limassol. Periodically revealed violators, who are forced to pay a fine. At the end of March, the person responsible for discharging the oil waste was found, and after a short investigation he was fined.
Eight thousand euros - not too big a sum to cover all the damage that was caused to the environment of Limassol. In addition to the fine, the perpetrator of the pollution paid all the due costs for the investigation, fees and other expenses, reports Philelewtheros.
A more severe punishment threatens the enterprise, which regularly discharged oil waste into the sea waters. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research will try to do everything to stop its work.
Problems with marine pollution in Limassol are not only due to unscrupulous enterprises. The ships coming to the port, despite all the checks, bans and fines, continue to discharge sewage in the coastal zone. The municipality of Limassol is going to undertake the necessary modernization of the port, namely the installation of special equipment. In addition, it is planned to tighten inspections on ships and introduce a more stringent punishment for pollution of the environment.
