Unguided blackmail tried to use the US to achieve a favorable vote for the UN General Assembly on the status of Jerusalem. However, nothing worked - US policy on Thursday condemned almost 60 states more than Russia's policy on Tuesday. But the difference in how Washington treats "international law" in such cases is particularly indicative.
The UN General Assembly on Thursday demanded not to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. On the vote, the relevant resolution was supported by 128 countries, nine opposed, and 35 abstained. All permanent members of the UN Security Council expressed their opinion, except for the United States. The resolution calls for the renunciation of the recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but the United States itself is not mentioned.
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said that the results of the vote in the UN General Assembly will not affect the US decision on Jerusalem, but they will affect the attitude of the United States to the UN itself.
"America will place an embassy in Jerusalem. This is what the American people want from us, and this is the right thing to do. No vote in the United Nations will have any effect on this, but this vote will affect how Americans treat the UN and how we treat countries that do not respect us in the UN, "Tais quoted Hailey as saying before the vote in the UN General Assembly on resolution against the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The diplomat also intimidated the audience: according to her, the States "will remember this day" when they are again asked to make the biggest contribution to the UN budget.
The composition of those who voted against the resolution is noteworthy. In addition to the States and Israel themselves, these are the four countries of Oceania, the actual American colonies, as well as several Latin American countries, for example Guatemala. None of the big countries made them a company.
Earlier, the US blocked the same resolution issued by the Arab states on the UN Security Council. However, the United States does not have such a veto in the General Assembly.
Recall that on Tuesday the same UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on human rights in the Crimea, directed against Russia. For the document proposed by Ukraine in co-authorship with 30 countries, then 70 states voted.
Thus, US policy on Thursday condemned almost 60 states more than Russia's policy on Tuesday. With her statement, Hayley made it clear: America does not care about the position of most UN countries, all international public opinion and law are for Washington nothing - in cases when the US policy is condemned. But the US constantly refers to international law and to the demand of the majority in the UN, when they make claims to other countries - when it coincides with their interests.
In general, when a resolution appears condemning Moscow, US politicians are bursting with a series of statements about the need for its implementation - with reference to the "international community". Such resolutions are the basis of State Department statements condemning Russia, for example, for "massive violations of human rights in the Crimea." The predecessor of Donald Trump Barack Obama, for example, generally demanded complete international isolation of Moscow - after the anti-Russian resolution on Crimea, adopted in March 2014.
But now the overwhelming majority of countries have voted against the US themselves, and the State Department, through the words of Hayley, admits that Washington simply does not care about the UN resolutions.
Trump publicly humiliated his own allies
On the eve of the vote, President Donald Trump threatened to deprive the country of funding that would support the UN Security Council resolution condemning his recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
"All these countries take our money ... They take hundreds of millions and even billions of dollars, and then vote against us in the Security Council or vote against us at the General Assembly,
Trump complained. Washington will be closely monitoring every voice, the president threatened, adding: "Let them vote against us, we will save this on this."
Turkey and Palestine immediately rejected the threats of Trump and Haley. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the world community not to succumb to pressure. "Today America, which is called the cradle of democracy, is trying to buy votes from other countries for its dollars," Erdogan RT quotes.
According to Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, US diplomats "make the next mistake when they spread their famous letter with threats against states and their right to make sovereign decisions," Al Jazeera TV channel reported.
Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu promised in advance not to recognize the resolution. As quotes the premiere of Interfax:
"The UN is the house of lies. The State of Israel resolutely rejects the resolution, even before it is accepted. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, whether it wants the UN or not. "
The convocation of the emergency session of the UN General Assembly was requested by the Palestinian Authority. Recall that since 2012, it (as "the state of Palestine") has the status of an observer state with the United Nations. Its sovereignty is recognized by 136 member states of the organization.
Arabs advised the US not to dig a pit
Before the meeting, the US permanent representative to the international organization Nikki Haley also sent letters to the members of the UN General Assembly. She again warned: "When you make your choice, I want you to know that the president and the US take this vote to their own account," the Wall Street Journal quoted.
Clear pressure on the postpredes of other countries, Haley "covered" the request to respect Washington's decision. "We do not ask other countries to move their embassies to Jerusalem, although we believe that this would be appropriate," the Permanent Representative explained. "We simply ask you to recognize the historical friendship, partnership and support that we have expanded, and to respect our decision about our own embassy."
The addressees admitted that they were stunned by the message. "Enough to dig a hole to yourself. You will not change any voices, "one of the diplomats warned.
Meanwhile, the threat of Trump involves the termination of financial assistance to US strategic allies in the Middle East. Some of these programs, for example, for Egypt, are assigned to the Congress, like the media. So, in 2018, the US should provide him with 1,38 billion dollars. Turkey next year should receive relatively modest 112 million dollars of military assistance. Even if Trump will save them, these amounts do not go to any comparison with the help that Washington in September already promised to Israel - this is 38 billion for 10 years.
Who will manage to "press"
The reaction to the threat of Trump depends on the country, noted in a comment to the newspaper VZGLYAD Americanist Dmitry Drobnitsky.
"Those countries that have long wanted to press on will say that, you voted in a very important resolution for us. This can be used as an excuse to make someone meaningly deprive of help, "the expert said. - In addition, American foreign aid is already shrinking very much, this is one of the points of the new administration. Money is needed domestically. "
This is generally a matter of rhetoric, adds Drobnitsky. "On the eve of an anti-Russian resolution. Well, what, now do it, or what? Of course not. We must understand that the UN General Assembly, the Security Council are such bodies that do not solve anything in the world, "the source stressed.
According to Drobnitsky, Americans will increasingly use their economic influence to promote their own interests. "Economic diplomacy, economic pressure, economic influence are acquiring unprecedented importance now," he stressed.
"We have to get used to this. Sanctions against Russia are also economic pressure with political goals. Just in the person of Donald Fredovich Trump, we have a man who speaks directly what he thinks, and basically does what he says, unlike other presidents who used to hide behind different euphemisms, "Drobnitsky summed up.
