Turkey is ready to discuss possible cooperation to create a national missile defense system (NMD) with all interested countries, including with Russia.
"Turkey intends to discuss with all stakeholders, including Russia, plans to develop a missile defense system", - declared the Secretary of Defense Industry of Turkey Ministry of Defence Ismail Demir at a press conference in Ankara.
Following the meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on October 10 a spokesman for the Turkish leader Ibrahim Kalyn said that Russia and Turkey work out the details of possible cooperation on missile defense.
Tender for procurement of components for the missile defense system 4 billion dollars was announced by Turkey in 2009 year. The winner of the Chinese company CPMIEC was announced in September 2013 years, which offered a price of 3,4 billion dollars. In addition to the Chinese company submitted its application American consortium Raytheon & Lockheed Martin, the Franco-Italian company Eurosam and the Russian Rosoboronexport.
Unlike competitors in the tender, China allowed the production of the missiles in Turkey and transfer of its technology to the Turkish side, however, the parties have not reached a final agreement on the extent of Turkey's participation in this project. In addition, the announcement of the victory of China has caused pressure on Turkey on the part of its NATO allies.
In November last year, Turkey has officially canceled the tender for the production of components for the missile defense system in connection with the decision to develop a national missile defense system project.
