The anti-war demonstration was held near the US Embassy in Nicosia, its participants condemned the missile and air strikes on Syria 14 April by forces of the United States, Britain and France, the Cypriot television channel Sigma reports.
The bombing of Syria involved British aircraft from the Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus.
The main opposition party of Cyprus, the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL), was organized by the demonstration, the general secretary of AKEL, the former president of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias, took part in the rally. In a written statement, the former president criticized the government and appealed to the Cypriot people to speak out in defense of Syrian rule.
The resolution of the rally sent to the US embassy condemns the attack on Syria as a crime against the Syrian people and as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Syria, interference in the internal affairs of the Syrian state.
Several hundred people participated in the anti-war campaign, including Turkish Cypriots, Syrians and Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the official representative of the Government of Cyprus, Prodromos Prodromo rejected the criticism of AKEL and recalled that Christofias, as chairman of Parliament, in 2003 supported the provision of assistance and use of the airspace of Cyprus by US military aircraft during the operation in Iraq.
In Cyprus, there are two British military bases - Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which are the sovereign territory of Great Britain. In the attack on Syria, four British Tornado aircraft flew from Akrotiri and struck at enterprises near the Syrian city of Homs.
