In Cyprus schools will increase the age of admission to six years

The Cabinet of Ministers of Cyprus decided in the next few years to gradually raise the age at which children can begin to study in an elementary school (dimotica), up to six years. This step was taken in view of the fact that, according to research, younger children find it more difficult to adapt to primary school.

According to the Ministry of Education, from the 2020-2021 school year, children entering the first class must be full five years and ten months, two months longer than now. In the 2021-2022 school year, only those who are six years old will be admitted to the first grade.

Similarly, the age requirements of those who go to the preparatory school (prodimotics) will change. By 1 September 2021 they should be full five years.

As stated in the official statement of the Ministry of Education, this change will positively affect the educational process.
