28 January - Week of the Publican and the Pharisee

The meaning of the name

At the Liturgy, an extract of Lk 18 is read: 10-14, in which the tax collector represents the sincerely penitent sinner, and the Pharisee a man of outwardly pious nature, but not seeing his sins and imagining himself to be righteous.

Liturgical features

The usual order of services gradually weaves the hymns from the Lenten Triodion - a collection of Lenten hymns and prayers. For example, the Sunday verses sing the stichera "Repentance open the door".

4 February - The Week of the Prodigal Son

The meaning of the name

At the Liturgy, an extract of Lk 15 is read: 11-32 about the prodigal son who left his father's house, but then repented and returned. The parable reminds us of our own infirmities and the great mercy of God, since it allegorically describes God's relationship to a fallen man.

Liturgical features

The Fast Triodion is more actively used, on Sundays, 136 psalm "On the Rivers of Babylon" is sung for the first time, which reminds a person that he is a prisoner of sin and that liberation from this slavery lies only through a determined struggle against him.

10 February - Universal Parent Saturday
The meaning of the name

The church prays for Christians who have departed into Eternity, and especially - about people who died violent death and who did not receive the usual burial service.

Liturgical features

The worship service is commemorated, only a few times a year. The abundance of funeral texts, but they are not dull, but joyful, full of hope for a universal resurrection.

11 February - Week of the Last Judgment, Meat

The meaning of the name

The Liturgy reads a passage of Mt 25: 31-46. Believers are reminded of the second coming of Christ and the impending Judgment Day.

Liturgical features

In the morning singing especially lenten texts from the Penitential Canon of Andrew of Crete - "Assistant and Patron ...". Preparation for the post is coming to an end. The divine service is permeated with the idea of ​​a universal response for all its actions before God.

12 - 17 February - Cheese Week, Shrovetide
Liturgical features

Prayers from the Lenten Triodion are used every day. On Wednesday and Friday the Liturgy is not performed, these days for the first time the prayer of Ephraim the Syrian "Lord and Master of my belly", which is one of the most important prayers of fasting, is read.

Postal regulations

There are no food restrictions on eating eggs, fish, as well as dairy products - cheese, butter, sour cream, and also - fish. Hence the name.

18 February - The Week of the Sinner, Forgiven Sunday. The memory of Adam exile

The meaning of the name

The Liturgy reads a passage of Mt 6: 14-21, in which Christ speaks of the need to forgive everyone. The key idea is a yearning for paradise, which was lost by people after the fall of Adam.

Liturgical features

After Vespers (in parish practice, this ritual is sometimes performed after the Liturgy), a rank of forgiveness is performed: like ancient monks, people ask each other for forgiveness for all offenses, in order to enter the fast with a peaceful soul. The last time is the 136 Psalm. In the texts of the service there is a clear reminder of the purpose of the upcoming fasting - the meeting of Easter. At vespers the priests re-dress in black robes.
