The Council of the University of Cyprus announced the holding of a strike part of employees 22 January. It is about a third of the teaching staff - graduates, doctors and laboratory assistants who are members of the trade union. Representatives of the Council stressed that this will not affect the course of the session.
Participants in the 48-hour strike of the union demand ten-month contracts instead of the two-month and three-month contracts granted to its members now, as well as the employer's contribution to the social insurance fund and the abolition of pay cuts introduced in 2013 and 2015.
Teachers with a doctoral degree and research staff are hired under contracts for specific projects and receive 55 euro per hour. According to international practice, contracts granted to such employees are not long-term, the Council said.
