The island authorities decided to revise the law on the parental leave, and now the young fathers in Cyprus, even if they are not married to the mother of the child, can "go" to the decree. Previously, the mandatory condition for maternity leave was the status of a married man. Many were outraged by this situation: after all, not all couples have a desire to enter into marital relations.

In this regard, the Parliament of Cyprus decided to revise the bill. As a result, by a majority of votes it was decided to introduce a decree for unmarried fathers, reports Philelewtheros. Those who opposed, noted - this will entail additional spending from the budget. According to approximate estimates, they will amount to five million euros.

The new law will grant the right to all fathers to take leave to take care of the child in the amount of two weeks. During this period, he will be paid three quarters of his salary. Leave can be issued on the basis of:

  • the birth of a child;
  • adoption of a child by him or his spouse by the age of 12 years;
  • the admission of the child by a married couple or simply by young people from a surrogate mother.

The authorities of Cyprus have already begun to develop rules on how the father will confirm his paternity or guardianship. The government fears that many will begin to cheat in order to receive compensation and extra rest.
